Knowledge and Perceptions on Overweight and Obesity among Adults in Same District, Tanzania

Overweight and obesity are nutritional problems requiring great attention in both developed developing countries where nutrition knowledge is confined to few people allied with health sectors. A cross-sectional study was conducted assess perception about overweight among 362 adults aged 25-55 years Same District, Kilimanjaro Region. This age group comprises active at higher risk of non-communicable diseases, much the effects may not be due aging. structured questionnaire administered through a face-to-face interview obtain demographic characteristics, obesity. Standard WHO Anthropometric procedure weight height measurement used Body Mass Index (BMI) which categorized as normal (18.5-24.9kg/m2), (25-29.9kg/m2) (≥30 kg/m2). high prevalence (23%) (17%) observed adults. Women were more (28%) obese compared men (14%) (6%) respectively. About 80% perceived their body being but reality, only 51% confirmed normal. Also, 22% respondents 10.5% BMI overweight. Nevertheless, 60% an person healthy rich 26% thin poor unhealthy because they associated thinness illness such HIV/AIDS. Obesity significantly related income, sex, parity mother, education levels, employment status P<0.005. The obesity, lack increase risks diseases. Hence, these findings will assist health-related stakeholders design appropriate interventions reduce problems.
